Tragic Accident in Polk County Claims Life of Clear Lake Resident

POLK COUNTY (DrydenWire) – The driver who tragically lost their life in a crash involving a passenger car and a semi-truck has been identified as 34-year-old Alexis Steinberger from Clear Lake, Wisconsin, according to an updated press release from the Polk County Sheriff’s Office.

Details of the Accident

On Wednesday, May 22, 2024, at 4:55 PM, the Polk County Sheriff’s Office Emergency Communications Center received a 911 call reporting a severe accident at the intersection of State Highway 63 and 60th Avenue, north of the Village of Clear Lake. The incident occurred when a passenger car, carrying three occupants and traveling westbound on 60th Avenue, failed to stop at a stop sign. The car entered the path of a northbound semi-tanker truck on Highway 63. The tanker, containing diesel fuel and gasoline, overturned into the west ditch as a result of the collision.

Victims of the Crash

Alexis Steinberger, the driver of the passenger car, was airlifted from the scene but sadly succumbed to her injuries at the hospital. Another passenger was also flown from Amery Hospital and remains in critical condition. The third occupant of the car was transported to Amery Hospital and is listed in stable condition. The driver of the semi-truck sustained no serious injuries.

Response and Recovery Efforts

Emergency responders, including fire departments from Clear Lake and Clayton, successfully contained the fuel leak from the overturned tanker. Highway 63 was closed overnight to allow for the safe removal of the fuel and to address a minor spill. The highway has since reopened.
