The Bengaluru police made a significant breakthrough on Sunday by apprehending a 26-year-old man, Girish M, who had allegedly bludgeoned two men to death in a span of seven days while they were sleeping on footpaths. Girish, a resident of Vasanthpura in south Bengaluru, is said to be an alcohol addict, adding a chilling dimension to the crimes he is accused of committing.

The first victim was found stoned to death on May 13 on K R Road under the Banashankari police jurisdiction. Just six days later, another body, belonging to a man in his late 20s, was discovered near K R Market. The police quickly connected the dots between the two murders when CCTV footage captured Girish in the vicinity of the crime scenes. This led to a meticulous analysis of over 30 CCTV cameras, eventually leading to Girish’s arrest.

It was revealed that Girish had a criminal record, having been previously implicated in cases of sexual harassment and robbery. After serving a 10-month sentence in 2020, he had been working odd jobs as a helper in a hotel and as a construction laborer. The police’s interrogation of Girish yielded a shocking confession – he admitted to killing both victims on May 12 and May 19, respectively.

The police are still working to establish the identity of the first victim, who bore distinctive tattoos on his right hand with the letters ‘VB’ and ‘NTR’. The investigation uncovered that this victim was murdered simply for refusing to give Girish cigarettes. The second victim, identified as Suresh, 26, from Kaverinagar in Banashankari, was known to Girish. The motive behind Suresh’s murder was his refusal to lend Girish money for alcohol, leading to a fatal altercation.

A police official remarked that Girish showed no remorse for his actions, displaying a callous disregard for human life. If not for his timely capture, the authorities believe he would have continued his series of killings unabated. Girish’s troubled family background, with his father selling off property in Banashankari and relocating to Kerala after a separation from his wife, adds a layer of complexity to his motivations.

This chilling tale of alleged serial killings underscores the importance of vigilant policing and community awareness. The swift action taken by the Banashankari police likely prevented further tragedies from unfolding on the streets of Bengaluru. As the investigation unfolds and more details come to light, the authorities will continue to work towards ensuring justice for the victims and their families.
