A 51-year-old man tragically lost his life in Kolkata as Cyclone Remal wreaked havoc across West Bengal after hitting the region between the coasts of the state and Bangladesh on Sunday night. The victim, identified as Mohammad Sajib, was struck by a falling cement tile in the Entali area of the city.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) reported on Monday that Cyclone Remal has weakened into a “cyclonic storm” and is expected to continue to weaken throughout the day. The cyclone brought torrential rains and strong winds on Sunday night, causing widespread destruction. Trees were uprooted, electricity poles were damaged, and properties were affected, leading to road blockages and waterlogging in low-lying areas of Kolkata. The city received 144 mm of rain on Sunday night alone.
Transportation services were severely impacted, with train services cancelled in many areas and flight operations at Kolkata airport suspended until Monday morning. Metro services were also disrupted due to waterlogging on tracks, leading to truncated services on certain routes.
Municipal authorities and disaster management teams are actively working to clear debris, remove fallen trees, and restore normalcy to the city. The full extent of the damage caused by Cyclone Remal is still being assessed.
A red alert has been issued for Murshidabad and Nadia districts, with heavy rainfall expected. Eight districts, including Kolkata, are likely to experience thundershowers and gusty winds. The Met office has warned of gusts up to 60 km per hour in these areas.
