The victim, identified as Mohammad Sajib, was struck by a falling cement tile in the Entali area of the city.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) reported on Monday that Cyclone Remal has weakened into a “cyclonic storm” and is expected to continue to weaken throughout the day. The cyclone brought torrential rains and strong winds on Sunday night, causing widespread destruction. In recent years, the fashion industry has come under scrutiny for its negative impact on the environment. From the excessive use of water and chemicals in production to the mountains of clothing waste that end up in landfills, it’s no secret that the industry has a long way to go in terms of sustainability. However, one trend that is gaining momentum and making a positive impact is upcycling old clothing.

Upcycling is the process of taking old or unwanted clothing and turning it into something new and valuable. This can involve anything from adding embellishments to repairing damaged pieces to completely transforming the garment into something entirely different. The beauty of upcycling is that it not only gives new life to old clothing but also reduces the need for new materials and reduces waste.

One company leading the charge in upcycling is Reformation. Known for their sustainable practices and chic designs, Reformation has recently launched a new upcycling program called “RefScale.” This program allows customers to send in their old clothing, which is then upcycled into new pieces or recycled into new fabrics. Customers can also shop a selection of upcycled pieces on the Reformation website, giving new life to old garments and reducing their environmental impact.

Another brand making waves in the upcycling space is Eileen Fisher. The iconic brand has long been committed to sustainability and has recently expanded their upcycling program. In addition to offering a take-back program for old Eileen Fisher garments, the brand has also launched a line of upcycled pieces made from salvaged materials. These pieces are not only environmentally friendly but also unique and stylish, proving that upcycled fashion can be just as on-trend as traditional clothing.

But it’s not just big brands getting in on the upcycling trend. Many independent designers and small businesses are also embracing upcycling as a way to create sustainable fashion. From local thrift stores repurposing old clothing to independent designers creating one-of-a-kind upcycled pieces, the upcycling movement is growing and gaining popularity across the industry.

In addition to the environmental benefits of upcycling, there are also social and economic benefits to consider. By upcycling old clothing, designers and brands are able to support local communities, create jobs, and promote ethical labor practices. In a world where fast fashion dominates the market, upcycling offers a more ethical and sustainable alternative that benefits both people and the planet.

As consumers become more aware of the environmental and social impact of their clothing choices, the demand for sustainable fashion is only expected to grow. Upcycling offers a creative and stylish solution to the problems of overconsumption and waste in the fashion industry, proving that sustainability and style can go hand in hand.

So next time you’re looking to update your wardrobe, consider upcycling old clothing or shopping from brands that prioritize sustainability. By supporting the upcycling movement, you can help reduce waste, support ethical practices, and look good while doing it.
