The unsettling incident unfolded at Ledo’s Tikok West mining site, situated between Bargolai and Namdang areas, around 12.30 am on Sunday. Dawa Cherpa from Nepal, along with John and Fenaal from Meghalaya, ventured into the rat-hole mine while a fourth individual assisted them in coal transportation. A sudden landslide altered the course of events, trapping the three individuals inside the perilous confines of the mine.
Rat-hole mining, a hazardous practice, involves the excavation of narrow tunnels, typically 3-4 feet high, to facilitate coal extraction. The term “rat-holes” aptly describes these claustrophobic passageways that accommodate only one person at a time.
