It was on January 23 when Schwab was responding to a welfare check on a 15-year-old boy in Martinsville. County dispatchers had received a distressing 911 call expressing concern about the teen’s well-being after he posted on social media about potential self-harm. Schwab, along with her fellow deputies, arrived at the home in Martinsville at around 7:30 a.m. That’s when the situation took a dangerous turn.
Despite knocking on the door, there was no response from inside the house. Suddenly, the teen fired a gun, hitting Schwab in the shoulder. The bullet went through her shoulder, causing significant injury. Schwab was swiftly taken to IU Health Methodist in Indianapolis for urgent medical care. Fortunately, she was released later that same day, much to the relief of her loved ones and colleagues.

Tragically, the 15-year-old boy, identified as Aidan Young, was found deceased inside the home after a prolonged standoff with law enforcement. It was a heartbreaking outcome to a situation that unfolded rapidly and unexpectedly.

Upon leaving the hospital, she expressed being in “high spirits,” eager to start her journey towards recovery.
