Arrest Made in Amolatar District Baby Theft Case

In a surprising twist of events, the territorial police in Amolatar District have successfully intercepted and apprehended a woman named Stella Akullo, who is suspected of stealing a newborn baby from Amolatar Health Centre IV.

The incident took place on the early morning of May 24, 2024, at around 2:45 am, at Amolatar Health Centre IV, located in the serene surroundings of Amolatar District.

The mother of the baby, Winnie Acio, and the father, Emmy Opio, were left in disbelief when an unidentified woman allegedly took their baby girl from the maternity ward right after delivery. The family resides in Angayiki village, Aburkidi parish, Arwotcek sub-county in Amolatar district.

Dr Moses Ekwang, the head of Amolatar Health Centre IV, wasted no time in reporting the incident to the authorities in Inomo Ward, Amolatar Town Council, as soon as the theft was discovered.

Witnesses at the health centre recalled seeing a suspicious woman who spoke multiple languages, including Kumam, Luo, Luganda, and English, while pretending to be waiting for a patient. This raised red flags and prompted a report to be filed at Amolatar Police Station under SD Ref: 02/24/05/2024.

The police immediately sprung into action by alerting various stakeholders across Amolatar district and engaging with local media outlets, including a radio station, to inform the public about the incident.

Patrick Okema, the North Kyoga Police spokesperson, confirmed that all entry and exit routes were closely monitored, and the ferry management at Namasale landing site was informed to prevent the suspect from escaping.

Successful Apprehension

Thanks to the coordinated efforts of the authorities and the community, Stella Akullo was apprehended around 6:30 a.m. the following morning, and the stolen baby was safely recovered. Akullo, a resident of Otuboi in Kalaki district, was swiftly taken into custody and transported to Amolatar Police Station for further proceedings.
