Bus Accident at Verna IDC Claims Lives of Four Labourers

Tragedy struck late Saturday night at the Verna IDC when a bus operated by a company crashed into temporary hutments, resulting in the loss of four lives and injuring several others. The incident took place around 11.30 pm as the bus was transporting employees along an internal road from Titan Gate Junction towards Loutolim.

Details of the Mishap

According to South Goa SP Sunita Sawant, the driver, Bharat Govekar, lost control while negotiating a turn and rammed into the hutments occupied by labourers from Bihar who were working on construction projects. As a result, eight workers were injured, with four tragically losing their lives on the spot. The injured were rushed to the South Goa District Hospital for medical treatment.

Night Shift Workers Offer Assistance

Upon hearing about the accident, night shift workers from nearby companies rushed to the scene to provide aid and support. Miraculously, the company staff on the bus managed to escape unharmed, thanks to the swift response of the surrounding workers.

Alcohol Test Conducted on Driver

During the investigation, police noted that the driver, Bharat Govekar, exhibited signs of alcohol consumption. He was also injured in the accident and admitted to the hospital for treatment. Alcohol tests were conducted to confirm his intoxication levels, with results pending for further action.
