Subway Attack Leaves New York City Rider with Severe Burns
A terrifying incident unfolded at the Houston Street subway station in lower Manhattan on Saturday afternoon, shocking commuters and leaving one individual with severe burn injuries.
Details of the Attack
The victim, identified as 23-year-old Petrit Alijaj, was about to board the 1 line train with his fiancée when a man suddenly approached them. The suspect, later identified as 49-year-old Nile Taylor, took a cup filled with liquid, ignited it, and callously threw it at Mr Alijaj.
In a selfless act of bravery, Mr Alijaj shielded his fiancée and cousins from the flames, causing his own shirt to catch fire. Despite the intense pain, he managed to extinguish the flames with his bare hands before the suspect fled the scene.
Victim’s Hospitalization
Following the attack, Mr Alijaj was rushed to New York Presbyterian-Weill Cornell Hospital for treatment. Doctors determined that approximately a third of his body had been affected by the burns, requiring immediate medical attention.

Suspect Apprehended
Law enforcement authorities swiftly apprehended Nile Taylor at the intersection of Canal Street and Renwick Street. Taylor, who was also found in possession of a cell phone stolen from another subway rider, now faces a litany of charges including assault, arson, and reckless endangerment.
Similar Incidents Under Investigation
Police are actively investigating a similar incident that occurred in February, where a man threw a container of flaming liquid at a group of individuals on a subway platform in the West 28th Street station. While such violent crimes are rare in the city’s subway system, recent high-profile attacks have heightened concerns among commuters.
Increased Security Measures
In response to these alarming incidents, Governor Kathy Hochul announced the deployment of hundreds of National Guard members to bolster security in the subway system. Additionally, 800 more police officers will be deployed to crack down on fare evasion and ensure the safety of passengers.
