Two members of a family, including a teenage girl, tragically drowned while bathing in the Chalakudy river at Manjali, near North Paravur. The victims were identified as 13-year-old Jwala Lakshmi and 27-year-old Megha. Megha’s sister Neha was rescued and is currently receiving treatment in a private hospital. The bodies were recovered by Fire and Rescue Services personnel after an hour-long search. The family had gone to the river to collect mussels when the accident occurred. Despite efforts by local people, Megha and Jwala Lakshmi could not be saved. The family was in Elanthikkara for ceremonies related to a relative’s death.

Tragic Drowning Incident at Chalakudy River in Manjali

On a fateful Sunday, a family outing to the picturesque Chalakudy river in Manjali turned into a tragedy as two members, including a teenage girl, lost their lives in a drowning incident. The victims have been identified as Jwala Lakshmi, 13 years old, and Megha, 27 years old. The young girls had gone to the river along with their family for a leisurely bath when the unfortunate incident occurred.

Identification of the Deceased

Jwala Lakshmi was the daughter of Vinu Chemmanattu from Kodakara, while Megha was the daughter of Rahul Kuttikkattuparambil from Puthenvelikkara. The family had been enjoying their time near the North Paravur area before the tragedy struck.

Rescue Efforts and Recovery

During the ill-fated outing, the family encountered strong currents in the Chalakudy river. Three members of the family, including Megha and Jwala Lakshmi, were swept away by the water while collecting mussels. Fortunately, Neha, Megha’s sister, was rescued by local residents and is currently receiving medical treatment in a private hospital.

Fire and Rescue Services personnel, aided by scuba divers, launched a search operation that lasted for an hour before recovering the bodies of the deceased girls. The incident occurred near Kozhithuruthu Bund in Puthenvelikkara, adding a somber note to what was supposed to be a joyous family gathering.


Community Response

The local community sprang into action upon hearing the cries for help from the family members. Despite their best efforts, they could not save Megha and Jwala Lakshmi, underscoring the dangers posed by the unpredictable river currents.

The family had been visiting their relatives in Elanthikkara to participate in ceremonies related to the recent passing of a loved one. The tragedy that unfolded has left the community in shock and mourning, serving as a stark reminder of the importance of water safety awareness.


The incident serves as a poignant reminder of the need for caution when venturing into natural bodies of water, especially during times of high water flow.
