Residents of Haladiapadar village in Patrapur block of Ganjam district were left reeling after a post-poll clash turned violent, leaving seven individuals injured. The incident, which took place on Saturday, saw a group of individuals armed with sharp weapons attacking the victims, all of whom were reported to be supporters of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
The injured individuals were rushed to Patrapur hospital for medical treatment, with four of them later being transferred to MKCG Medical College and Hospital for further care. Among the injured were C Rajeyya (23), A Prakash (22), L Niranjan (25), and L Tulasi (21), who recounted being attacked in their own homes by a group of around 15 workers from the Biju Janata Dal (BJD) armed with swords. The assailants allegedly issued threats to the victims, warning them to cease their support for the BJP under the risk of death.
Condemnation of the attack was swift, with BJP candidate for the Chikiti Assembly segment, Manoranjan Dyan Samantara, attributing the violence to the fear of losing the election among BJD supporters. Despite the polling having taken place on May 13 and results slated for announcement on June 4, tensions remain high as political rivalries escalate.
However, local BJD leaders have refuted any involvement in the attack, suggesting that the violence may have stemmed from internal conflicts within the BJP itself. In response to the incident, Jarada police have launched an investigation into the matter, with armed police units deployed to maintain peace in the area.
