2. Pub ownership accountability

The Pune police commissioner Amitesh Kumar is examining the role of the Blak Marriott pub’s owners in the second case registered against the builder and representatives of two pubs. The teenager involved in the crash that resulted in the death of two software engineers had visited both pubs before the incident. The police have arrested individuals from both Cosie pub and Blak Marriott. The owner of the other pub has not been named in the FIR as the FL-III license is in the name of two brothers who have outsourced the operations. Separate cases have been registered under the Juvenile Justice Act, and a deepfake video related to the incident is also under investigation.

PUNE: The investigation into the tragic accident involving a Porsche Taycan crashing into a motorcycle and killing two software engineers in Kalyaninagar on Sunday has taken a new turn as the role of the owners of Blak Marriott pub comes under scrutiny. City Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar has stated that the owners of the pub are being examined in connection with the incident, which has led to the registration of a second case against the builder and representatives of two pubs the teenager visited before the accident.
The police have already made arrests in connection with the case, including the owner and two staffers of Cosie pub, where the 17-year-old and his friends initially visited, as well as two staffers of Blak Marriott, both located in Mundhwa.
When questioned about why the owner of the other pub was not named in the FIR, Kumar explained, “The FL-III licence is in the name of the two brothers who own the facility. However, it has been outsourced to another agency for day-to-day operations, and we need to examine legal aspects before deciding on naming the owners in the case.” The investigation is currently reviewing documents submitted by the licence holders to show that the pub has been rented out, Kumar added.
Regarding the decision to file separate cases after the accident, Kumar stated that the second FIR was against the teenager’s father and the pub representatives under the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection) Act.
In addition to the ongoing investigation into the accident, the police are also looking into a deepfake video that has been circulating on social media, purportedly created by the teenager. Kumar mentioned that they are trying to trace the source of the video and may register a case for creating confusion and unrest in society.
The fatal accident, which took place at 2:30 am on Sunday, has shocked the community and raised questions about underage drinking and the responsibility of pub owners in ensuring the safety of their patrons. The investigation is ongoing, and more details are expected to emerge as the case progresses.
