Ahmedabad Medical College Suspends Students for Ragging

Four students, including two women, at a medical college in Ahmedabad have been suspended for allegedly ragging their juniors. The college, which is run by AMC Medical Education Trust, an entity of the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation, is located in the Maninagar area of the city. The Dean of the Medical College, Dr Dipti Shah, announced on Friday that an inquiry had been conducted, leading to the suspension of the four students who were pursuing a Master of Surgery.

According to Dr Shah, two students were suspended for two years and one year, respectively, while the other two were suspended for 25 days. The decision to suspend the students came after four first-year students and their parents lodged a complaint against the seniors on May 21. A meeting of the college council was convened to address the issue and all parties were heard.

Allegations of Abuse and Bullying

The suspended seniors were accused of asking junior students to perform tasks like writing prescriptions multiple times and subjecting them to verbal abuse. Dr Shah stated, “After a detailed inquiry, the council unanimously decided to suspend the four students as we have a zero-tolerance policy towards ragging.”

Tragic Student Suicide in Kerala

In a separate incident, a 20-year-old student was found dead in the bathroom of a college hostel in Kerala’s Wayanad district. The deceased, identified as Sidharthan JS, was a veterinary student. His family alleged that he had been assaulted by members of the Students’ Federation of India (SFI), the student wing of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) or CPI(M). The incident occurred on February 18 and is currently under investigation by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).

According to reports, Sidharthan was subjected to continuous physical and mental assault by his seniors and classmates for 29 hours before taking his own life. The suicide abetment case file handed to the CBI by the Kerala Police revealed the extent of the abuse suffered by Sidharthan, which ultimately led to his tragic decision to end his life.

Police Investigation and Statements

The police report stated, “They assaulted Sidharthan on February 16 from 9 am to 2 pm till February 17 continuously with hand and using a belt and subjected him to cruel ragging. This made him in an utter stage of mental stress and feeling that he can neither continue study in the Institute and complete this course nor go home dropping the course. As he is so mentally stressed, he felt that there is no option for him other than suicide, he committed suicide by hanging himself in the bathroom of men’s hostel in between 12.30 pm and 13.45 pm on February 18.”

Our thoughts go out to the families and friends of the victims in these distressing incidents. It is imperative that educational institutions take a strong stand against bullying and harassment to ensure the safety and well-being of all students.
