Violence Mars Polling in West Bengal
In the ongoing Lok Sabha elections in West Bengal, incidents of violence have marred the polling process in several constituencies. The Election Commission has received 954 complaints from various political parties, alleging EVM malfunctions and obstruction of polling agents.
Clashes Between TMC and BJP Supporters
In the Ghatal constituency, clashes broke out between supporters of the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) over the entry of polling agents into booths. BJP candidate Hiran Chatterjee alleged that TMC goons were disrupting the voting process by preventing their booth agents from entering.
BJP activists staged a protest in the area, setting tires on fire to express their discontent. TMC MP Dev, seeking re-election from the seat, refuted the allegations made by the BJP.
Protests and Allegations of Assault
In the Kanthi constituency, BJP activists protested against central forces, accusing them of assaulting voters. BJP candidate Soumendu Adhikari claimed that the TMC and central forces were working against their party and beating their supporters.

Meanwhile, in the Midnapore constituency, BJP candidate Agnimitra Paul faced opposition from TMC activists, resulting in a scuffle between the two groups. Central forces intervened to disperse the mob and maintain order.
Security Measures and Incidents
During polling in Tamluk, a group of people shouted slogans against BJP candidate Abhijit Gangopadhyay, prompting a deployment of security personnel to control the situation. Similarly, in Bankura, BJP candidate Subhas Sarkar faced protests while visiting a polling booth.
Tragically, a Trinamool Congress worker in Mahishadal, Purba Medinipur district, was killed by unidentified individuals. The deceased, identified as Sheikh Moibul, was a member of the local panchayat samiti.
Voter Turnout and Official Response
Despite the incidents of violence, West Bengal recorded a voter turnout of 54.80% in the eight Lok Sabha constituencies by 1 pm. The Election Commission has taken note of the situation and sought a report from the presiding officer to address the issues faced during polling.
