The Search Warrant

On Tuesday, May 21, detectives from the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office executed a search warrant at 2815 Barton Rd., located approximately six miles east of St. Clair. This action was prompted by information received from detectives in St. Charles County and the city of St. Charles regarding a spate of trailer thefts in their respective areas.

The Stolen Goods

During the search, law enforcement recovered a stolen Homesteader brand box trailer, along with a stolen Honda and Suzuki motorcycle that were inside the trailer when it was taken from Saint Charles County. In addition to these items, a J&C box trailer, a Keystone Raptor camper trailer, and a Big Tex tandem axle trailer were also found on the property, all reported stolen from St. Charles County.

The “Chop Shop”

Further investigation led detectives to a “chop shop” in the basement of the home, where they discovered a disassembled Harley Davidson motorcycle frame and engine with their vehicle identification numbers (VINs) removed. Despite the tampering, detectives were able to identify the Harley Davidson as a 2008 Softail Custom reported stolen from St. Clair, valued at $10,000. The Big Tex trailer was also identified as one stolen from Route 66 Storage & Properties in Villa Ridge, valued at $13,000.

The Suspect

The individual at the center of this operation was identified as Cody J. Schutte, with a Gerald address listed in online court records. Schutte admitted to possessing the stolen items and knowing they were likely stolen. He also confessed to using his truck to steal the Big Tex trailer from Route 66 Storage. As a result, Schutte faces four felony charges in Franklin County, including stealing $750 or more, receiving stolen property, and altering or removing item numbers to deprive the lawful owner. Additional charges are expected in St. Charles County.
