The Tragic Incident in Muzaffarabad
In a heartbreaking turn of events, a woman identified as 38-year-old Robina Safdar threw her preschooler child into the Jhelum River before jumping into the swollen water channel from a bridge in Muzaffarabad. This shocking incident took place on Thursday, marking the second time such a tragedy has occurred in less than three weeks in the area.
The Location of the Incident
The CCTV footage captured the harrowing moment on the right side of River Jhelum in Domel area. The iron bridge, which dates back to the pre-partition era, is mostly used by pedestrians or two or three wheelers. It stands adjacent to the RCC Quaid-i-Azam Bridge, which is hardly a few yards away on its western side.
The Heartbreaking Act
The footage shows Robina Safdar, dressed in a long chador, walking slowly towards the bridge at around 9:41am, holding the hand of her son Shahzeb, who appeared to be less than five years old. As she reached the bridge, she hesitated momentarily while the bridge was occupied by pedestrians and rickshaws. However, as soon as the bridge cleared, she made the unthinkable decision to throw her son into the river before jumping in herself.

The police have revealed that Robina Safdar was reportedly receiving treatment for mental disorders in Abbottabad for the past few years. However, investigations are ongoing to verify these claims and understand the motive behind this tragic act.
A Tragic Pattern
This incident mirrors a similar tragedy that occurred on May 5, when Bushra Sagheer, the wife of a police constable, also took her own life along with her infant daughter in the same manner from the RCC Quaid-i-Azam Bridge. While her in-laws claimed she was suffering from mental ailments, her maternal relatives alleged that domestic violence led her to this extreme decision.
As the community in Muzaffarabad grapples with the aftermath of these devastating events, there is a pressing need for mental health support and awareness to prevent such tragedies from occurring in the future.
