The Local Homeless Population: Children Make Up More Than One-Third

In a recent survey conducted on January 24 by partners and volunteers of Foothills Housing Network, it was revealed that more than one-third of the homeless population in the area are children. The Point In Time Count provides crucial data on the number of individuals without permanent housing in Culpeper, Fauquier, Orange, Madison, and Rappahannock counties.

Insights from the Point In Time Count

On the night of the count, 274 individuals were identified as experiencing homelessness in the planning district. While this number remained relatively stable compared to the previous year, there were notable shifts in the demographics of the homeless population. More women and girls were found to be homeless compared to men and boys, and there was a higher representation of Latino adults and children this year. Additionally, a larger number of individuals reported that this was their first episode of homelessness.

Reasons for Homelessness

Nearly half of the homeless residents reported living with a disability. The top three reasons cited for their current situation were eviction, unemployment/underemployment, and domestic violence. Children, who accounted for 34% of the homeless population, were particularly affected by racial disparities and saw an increase in numbers compared to the previous year.

Distribution of Homeless Individuals

The count revealed that the number of single adults increased by 11%, primarily due to the Winter Shelter in Culpeper being open during the survey. Veterans experiencing homelessness decreased slightly, but the majority of them still faced unsheltered conditions. In terms of geographical distribution, Culpeper had 76 homeless adults and 17 children, Orange County had 14 adults and 11 children, Rappahannock had three adults, Madison County had 16 adults and three children, and Fauquier had 72 adults and 62 children.

Demographics of the Homeless Population

Among the homeless individuals counted, 15 were veterans, four women were pregnant and homeless, and 44 homeless adults had children with them. More than half of the homeless adults were women, and nearly 56% of the children were girls. The age distribution showed that a quarter of homeless individuals were in the 35-44 age range, while over 17% were 55 or older.
