Police Arrest Man Who Set His Car on Fire in Elegu

In a bizarre turn of events, a man in Elegu has been arrested by the police for setting his black Toyota Wish car on fire. The man, identified as Suubi Baliddawa, reportedly took this extreme action out of frustration after his car had been held by the police since early May following an accident.

The Incident

On May 7 at 9:18 am at Muvule along Gayaza Road opposite Riham Depot, Suubi Baliddawa was driving his car from Mpererwe towards Kalelwe when he accidentally hit and injured a pedestrian named Naome Nakabaliki, who was crossing the road to check on her son working in a nearby building.

After the collision, Baliddawa tried to flee the scene but was stopped by boda-boda riders who insisted he take the injured pedestrian to the hospital. Reluctantly, he agreed but then transferred the victim to a hired motorcycle on the way to the hospital. He also provided a false number plate for his vehicle in an attempt to evade responsibility.

Police Investigation

Following the incident, the victim’s son went to Kanyanya Police Station to report the matter. Baliddawa, who initially claimed he was taking his sick child to Gulu for treatment, was instructed to surrender his vehicle to the nearest police station, but he failed to comply.

Eventually, on May 17, Baliddawa turned himself in at Kanyanya Police Station after being directed by the OC Traffic Elegu. Despite initially denying his involvement in the accident, he was detained after confessing to providing false information and accepting liability for the crash.

Aftermath

On May 18, Baliddawa was granted police bond but was required to produce his driving license, insurance certificate, and registration book for inspection within five days. However, on May 21, a video emerged on social media showing him setting his vehicle on fire, leading to his subsequent arrest.

The police have now charged Baliddawa with arson and are conducting further investigations into the incident. The case serves as a reminder of the importance of following proper procedures and taking responsibility for one’s actions, rather than resorting to extreme measures.
