A 42-year-old man in Portland, Oregon, has been sentenced to life in prison for the stabbing deaths of two individuals in 2020. Phillip Lawrence Nelson was found guilty of second-degree murder for the death of Cassy Leaton and first-degree manslaughter for the death of Najaf “Nate” Hobbs. Multnomah County Circuit Court Judge Eric Dahlin imposed a life sentence with the possibility of parole after 25 years for Leaton’s murder and a consecutive 10-year sentence for Hobbs’ murder. Nelson will be eligible for parole consideration after 35 years. He will serve his sentence at the Oregon Department of Corrections.

Man Sentenced to Life in Prison for Double Murder in Northeast Portland
A 42-year-old man has been sentenced to life in prison for the brutal stabbing deaths of two individuals in northeast Portland. The Multnomah Co. District Attorney’s Office announced that Phillip Lawrence Nelson will spend the rest of his days behind bars for the murders of Najaf “Nate” Hobbs and Cassy Leaton.

The tragic incident took place on June 16, 2020, on Northeast Davis Street in Portland. Police received a report of a stabbing and rushed to the scene, where they found two victims. Hobbs succumbed to his injuries at the scene, while Leaton passed away later at the hospital.
Following an intensive investigation, Nelson was identified as the prime suspect in the case. He was apprehended on June 18, 2020, and has been in custody at the Multnomah County Detention Center ever since.
Court Verdict
After a trial that lasted several years, a Multnomah County jury found Nelson guilty of second-degree murder for Leaton’s death and first-degree manslaughter for Hobbs’ death on April 26, 2024.
Sentencing
Multnomah County Circuit Court Judge Eric Dahlin handed down a life sentence to Nelson, with the possibility of parole after 35 years. He will first serve 25 years for Leaton’s murder, followed by an additional 10-year term for Hobbs’ murder. Nelson will then be transferred to the Oregon Department of Corrections to begin serving his sentence.
