2 kids among 4 killed as jeep crashes near Sirhind canal

According to sources, the group of around 15 pilgrims had visited a shrine in Una, Himachal Pradesh on Thursday and were returning to their respective villages when the driver of their Mahindra pickup jeep lost control near the bridge, causing the vehicle to slide down a slope towards the canal. The vehicle eventually came to a stop after hitting trees on the side of the canal, but Sukhpreet fell into the water and was swept away by the current. The rest of the occupants sustained injuries, with two children dying on the spot and the two women passing away during treatment at a hospital. Currently, 13 injured individuals are receiving medical care at a hospital in Chamkaur Sahib.
The driver of the vehicle, Gurdeep Singh from Nizampur village, shared with the police that the accident occurred due to a speeding vehicle on the road adjacent to the canal. DSP of Samrala, Tarlochan Singh, confirmed that a case has been filed against the unknown driver of the speeding vehicle. Efforts are being made to locate Sukhpreet, who is believed to have drowned in the canal.
Police officials suspect that the driver may have momentarily dozed off, resulting in the tragic incident. ASI Jagtar Singh, who is leading the investigation, mentioned that the owner of the vehicle, Baljinder Singh of Sihora village, had recently purchased the pick-up jeep and had used it for the pilgrimage trip before starting commercial operations with it. The community is grieving the loss of lives and hoping for the safe recovery of the missing child amid this heartbreaking incident.
