A man from Salisbury has been taken into custody following an incident where Catawba College security observed him carrying an AR-style rifle while on the college campus.

The authorities were alerted to the situation at around 2 a.m. after security personnel at Catawba College reported the presence of an individual with a firearm on campus. According to Justin Crews, the public information officer for the Salisbury Police Department, officers were quick to respond to the call.

Campus security informed the police that they had spotted three men near a vehicle close to the basketball courts during their regular safety patrols. Upon reviewing security camera footage, it became apparent that one of the men possessed an AR-style rifle inside the vehicle. This prompted the security team to notify the police department immediately.

Upon arriving at the scene, law enforcement officers located the men in a parked car situated off West Innes Street. One of the individuals, identified as 19-year-old Kayvone Rashawn Norman, confessed to having the rifle in his possession inside the vehicle. However, Norman did not provide a reason for carrying the firearm when questioned by the officers.

Following the incident, Norman was arrested and charged with felony possession of a weapon on an educational property. He was subsequently taken to the Rowan County Magistrate’s Office, where he was released on a written promise to appear in court by Magistrate Jeffrey Holshouser.
