A man from New Mexico has been charged with attempting to set fire to a California preschool and a nearby strip mall. Jonathan A. Barajas Nava, 38, poured an ignitable liquid at the entrance of Retreat Church and Yucaipa Christian Preschool, where 48 students and 14 staff members were present. Fortunately, no injuries were reported. Later, Nava allegedly set fire to a strip mall a mile away. Authorities confirmed both fires were started with a gasoline-type liquid and a lighter. Nava, who was on probation for a previous arson incident, faces up to 40 years in federal prison if convicted. The case is being investigated by multiple agencies.

Man Charged with Attempting to Burn Down California Preschool and Strip Mall
A New Mexico man, Jonathan A. Barajas Nava, has been charged with two counts of attempted destruction of property by means of fire in a shocking incident that took place in Yucaipa, California. According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office in the Central District of California, Nava allegedly tried to burn down Retreat Church and Yucaipa Christian Preschool on April 24. Fortunately, despite 48 preschool students and 14 staff members being inside the building at the time, no one was injured.
Alleged Arson Attempts at Preschool and Strip Mall
After the failed attempt at the preschool, Nava reportedly headed to a nearby strip mall where he allegedly poured an ignitable liquid on the building’s gas meters and set them on fire. This alarming incident prompted multiple calls to the police, with one brave neighbor even intervening to put out the fire before firefighters arrived at the scene.
Neighbourhood on High Alert
Neighbors in the area described seeing a man carrying a gas can approaching the school entrance before setting it ablaze. The suspect, believed to be wearing a hoodie and driving a pickup truck with a loud muffler, then proceeded to the strip mall where another fire was reported a mile away.
Authorities Investigate Arson Incidents
Law enforcement officers confirmed that both the preschool and strip mall fires were set using a gasoline-type liquid and a lighter. The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Office received reports of the fires and promptly began investigating the incidents, leading to the identification and arrest of the suspect, Jonathan A. Barajas Nava.

Arrest and Legal Proceedings
Nava was apprehended after a dramatic incident where he was trapped on a chain-linked fence in his burning pickup truck. Despite attempts to accelerate the engine, Nava eventually fell out of the vehicle with one of his legs engulfed in flames. He was later treated for his injuries and taken into custody. Nava is facing significant legal consequences, including the possibility of between five and 40 years in federal prison if convicted for the California fires.
Next Steps in the Case
Nava’s arraignment is scheduled for May 28, where he will face the charges brought against him by the U.S. Attorney’s Office.
