A man from Cicero was arrested in Oak Brook, Illinois, for leading police on a high-speed chase in a stolen vehicle. The Oak Brook police were alerted to a suspected stolen car traveling through the western suburb and began following the 2021 Camaro ZL1, valued at over £45,000. Despite attempts to stop the vehicle on I-290 eastbound, the Camaro refused to pull over and reached speeds of 100 mph in a 45 mph construction zone. The suspect, identified as 22-year-old Javier Barajas, fled on foot but was apprehended shortly after. Barajas faces charges of possession of a stolen motor vehicle and fleeing and eluding police.

A Cicero man was apprehended by authorities on Wednesday for allegedly leading police on a high-speed pursuit in a stolen vehicle.

Details of the Incident

At approximately 10:19 p.m., Oak Brook law enforcement officials received a report of a suspected stolen car making its way through the western suburb. Officers immediately began tailing the 2021 Camaro ZL1, a luxury vehicle valued at over $60,000.

The stolen vehicle entered I-290 eastbound at Army Trail Road, prompting Oak Brook police and the Illinois State Police to attempt a traffic stop. Unfortunately, the driver of the Camaro chose to evade authorities. As the pursuit continued near St. Charles Road, the Camaro accelerated, reaching speeds of up to 100 mph in a 45 mph construction zone.

Apprehension of the Suspect

The suspect eventually drove to 17th Street in Maywood, where he abandoned the vehicle and attempted to flee on foot. He was swiftly captured by law enforcement officers on 15th Avenue and identified as 22-year-old Javier Barajas.

Statement from Authorities

Speaking on the incident, DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin emphasized the importance of complying with law enforcement. He stated, “It is very simple: if you hear sirens and see flashing lights behind you, pull over. I can’t be more clear—anyone who attempts to flee from police will be caught.”

Legal Charges

Following his arrest, Barajas was charged with possession of a stolen motor vehicle and fleeing and eluding police. He made an appearance in court the following day and was released pending his trial, scheduled for June 17.
