A former teacher from William H. Farquhar Middle School has reached a settlement in a lawsuit against the Montgomery County Board of Education and former principal Joel Beidleman. The teacher, referred to as Jane Doe in the lawsuit, will receive a $300,000 settlement, indicating that the school board is responsible for the payment. Attorney Jerry Hyatt, representing the teacher, expressed her relief at reaching an agreement and acknowledged the hardships she endured over several years.

Allegations of discrimination and a hostile work environment were made against Beidleman during his tenure as principal at Farquhar, leading to the lawsuit filed by the teacher. The complaint, spanning 20 pages, outlined instances where Beidleman allegedly sexually harassed her at school and outside of school, intimidated her, made uncomfortable comments, and jeopardized her job in retaliation for rejecting his advances.

The lawsuit came in the wake of a report by The Washington Post in August 2023, exposing years of alleged misconduct by Beidleman and inadequate response from MCPS officials tasked with investigating complaints about staff members. Following the publication of the report, Beidleman was promoted to principal of Paint Branch High School in Burtonsville, but is no longer employed by MCPS.

The fallout from the Beidleman scandal prompted significant actions from MCPS to restore its reputation and rebuild trust within the school community and among local officials. Superintendent Monifa McKnight resigned on February 2, following efforts to implement a corrective action plan and strengthen the investigations unit at MCPS. The district has launched a Correction Action Progress Report webpage to track the steps being taken after an investigation by the Montgomery County Office of the Inspector General.

When contacted for comment, MCPS spokesperson Liliana Lopez and school board communication coordinator Christie Scott declined to discuss legal personnel matters related to the settlement. Attorneys for Beidleman from the Miller, Miller & Canby law firm did not respond to requests for comment due to office closure for the Memorial Day holiday.
