The discovery was made when a 44-year-old male driver with a valid border crossing card was referred for further examination. Utilizing non-intrusive scanning technology, officers detected irregularities and called in a CBP human and narcotics detection canine, which led to the discovery of 1,419 packages of methamphetamine weighing 5,207 kilograms. CBP officers seized the narcotics, tractor, and trailer, while the driver was handed over to Homeland Security Investigation (HSI) for further scrutiny. The operation was part of Operation Apollo, a nationwide effort to combat fentanyl smuggling.

The Bust at Otay Mesa Commercial Facility

U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers stationed at the Otay Mesa Commercial Facility made a significant discovery on Monday morning. While inspecting a shipment of squash, officers uncovered a staggering $18 million dollars’ worth of methamphetamine hidden within the cargo.

At around 6:47 a.m., CBP officers encountered a 44-year-old male driver operating a commercial tractor-trailer carrying a load of squash. The driver, who possessed a valid border crossing card, was directed for further scrutiny by CBP officers, alongside the tractor-trailer and its contents.

The Discovery

Upon conducting a full scan of the tractor-trailer using non-intrusive scanning technology, CBP officers noticed irregularities. As a result, a CBP human and narcotics detection canine was brought in. The canine promptly alerted officers to the presence of narcotics within the shipment.

The Shocking Find

Hidden within the shipment of squash were a total of 1,419 packages containing methamphetamine. The seized narcotics weighed a total of 11,469 pounds, with an estimated street value of $18,350,400.

She praised their effectiveness in preventing the illegal importation of narcotics, highlighting their commitment to upholding the highest standards of service.

Further Actions Taken

Following the seizure of the narcotics, commercial tractor, and trailer, the driver was handed over to Homeland Security Investigation (HSI) for further investigation.

This seizure is a result of Operation Apollo, a comprehensive counter-fentanyl initiative that commenced in southern California on October 26, 2023, and expanded to Arizona on April 10, 2024. Operation Apollo focuses on intelligence gathering and partnerships, leveraging resources from federal, state, local, tribal, and territorial entities to combat the smuggling of fentanyl into the United States.
