Kolkata: A gruesome murder case has shocked the city of Kolkata as the Crime Investigation Department (CID) and Kolkata Police’s Special Task Force (STF) revealed harrowing details regarding the murder of Anwarul Azim Anar, a member of Bangladesh’s ruling Awami League. Making a significant breakthrough in the case, the CID announced that an illegal immigrant living in Mumbai, Jihad Hawladar, had been arrested in connection with the Bangladeshi MP’s murder. Hawladar, a 24-year-old Bangladeshi national who worked as a butcher in Mumbai, confessed that he and four other Bangladeshi nationals strangled the MP to death on the orders of Akhtaruzzaman, a Bangladeshi-origin US citizen believed to be the mastermind of the case. Shocking details emerged as the accused peeled the skin off the MP’s body, removed all the flesh, and minced it to prevent identification.

The body was then chopped into small pieces, packed into plastic packets, and disposed of in different parts of Kolkata through various modes of transport. With three persons already in custody in connection with the case, the CID stated that Jihad Hawladar will be brought before the Barasat Court for further investigation to locate the MP’s body parts.

MP missing since May 13

On Wednesday, Bangladesh Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan confirmed in a news conference in Dhaka that the MP was killed in Kolkata. Bloodstains were discovered in the New Town building where Anwarul Azim is believed to have been murdered, and a forensic investigation is currently underway.

Anwarul Azim, the lawmaker from the Jhenaidah-4 constituency in Bangladesh, arrived in the West Bengal capital on May 12 and was last seen on the afternoon of May 13 when he went for a medical check-up with friends in Bidhannagar near Kolkata. Concerned by his sudden disappearance, his friend Gopal Viswas lodged a missing person complaint at the Baranagar police station in Bidhannagar on May 18, 2024.

Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina expressed deep shock and sorrow at Anwarul Azim’s death, extending her sympathy to the bereaved family. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) urged the West Bengal government to investigate the case following the MP’s disappearance.

BJP criticizes TMC over Bangladeshi MP’s murder

Meanwhile, BJP’s candidate for Medinipur’s Lok Sabha Seat, Agnimitra Paul, criticized the Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress (TMC) government, questioning the state’s law and order situation. “This is another example of the deteriorating law and order in Kolkata. What is the police doing? A Bangladeshi MP who came here was murdered. This is utterly shameful. Complete lawlessness. They won’t even be able to apprehend the perpetrator,” Paul remarked.

Dilip Ghosh, former head of BJP’s state unit and sitting MP from Medinipur, highlighted the lack of safety in West Bengal for both Indians and foreigners. Ghosh attributed such incidents of violence to the Trinamool’s desperation due to their bleak prospects in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.

Family members of Anwarul Azim are expected to arrive in Kolkata for further formalities, with their visa process currently underway. Shaban Mahmood, Minister (Press) at the High Commission for Bangladesh in New Delhi, noted, “He was a frequent visitor to Kolkata and had close ties with the people here. Maybe he came for medical treatment, business purposes, or any other reason. His daughter is attempting to travel to Kolkata today.”
