The individual who was a passenger in a delivery van involved in a fatal wrong-way collision on Highway 401 near Toronto last month has been charged in connection with a robbery related to the incident, according to court documents.
Charges Against Manpreet Gill
Recent court records obtained from Oshawa reveal that Manpreet Gill is facing a total of 12 criminal charges stemming from the day of the crash. These charges include an allegation of robbing an LCBO store. It is important to note that he has not been charged in relation to the actual collision that resulted in the deaths of four individuals, including an infant, following a high-speed police pursuit through Durham region.

Gill, aged 38, was identified as the sole passenger in the U-Haul van that crashed on Highway 401 in Whitby, Ont. on April 29. This occurred after a reported robbery at an LCBO in Bowmanville, located in the regional municipality of Clarington. The van was observed weaving through traffic in the wrong direction, while being pursued by a significant number of police vehicles on both sides of the highway.
Tragically, the resulting multi-vehicle collision claimed the lives of three-month old Aditya Vivaan from Ajax, as well as his grandparents, Manivannan Srinivasapillai and Mahalakshmi Ananthakrishnan, who were visiting from India. The driver of the van, Gagandeep Singh, also lost his life in the crash.
Legal Proceedings
Following the crash, Gill was hospitalized with serious injuries. His current condition remains unknown. The newly obtained charge sheet from an Oshawa courthouse on Friday suggests that police allege Gill was involved in the chain of events leading up to the collision.
Despite facing these charges, Gill did not attend his scheduled bail hearing at the Ontario Court of Justice in Oshawa. The charges against him include robbery at the Clarington LCBO, possession of stolen merchandise from the same store, and breach of probation. Police records also indicate that Gill is accused of stealing items from a Canadian Tire in Clarington on April 26.
Previous Criminal Offences
Information from the court records reveals that Gill was on probation at the time of the crash and had faced other criminal charges in recent years. In February 17, he was charged with stealing items from an LCBO in Vaughan, as well as possession of stolen property and breach of probation. Subsequently, he was charged in July 2022 for being in possession of a stolen vehicle in Mississauga.
Court documents related to the Mississauga incident included a handwritten note dated May 6, 2024, indicating that Gill was still in hospital and required time for recovery. The investigation into the tragic events surrounding the collision continues.
