The transition to the new facility began on April 30, moving inmates from the existing correctional centre, which has been in operation since 1953. The centre, originally a reform school, was converted to a correctional facility in the 1980s and currently accommodates up to 221 inmates serving shorter sentences. Notably, the centre offers the Guthrie residential addiction therapeutic program, a 52-bed initiative that focuses on addiction treatment, counselling, and behavioural modelling.

In the second phase of the project, scheduled to run until the spring of 2025, the old buildings will be dismantled to make way for new developments. Plans include the construction of a traditional Indigenous programs building named Lelum, a horticultural centre, and additional programming space. Collaborating with the Snuneymuxw and Snaw’Naw’As First Nations, cultural programs have been incorporated into the centre’s design to create a positive and inclusive environment.
