A security guard attached to Bharathiar University, Coimbatore, tragically passed away while being chased by a wild elephant on the campus on Thursday.

The deceased has been identified as N. Shanmugam, a 57-year-old resident of Nehru Nagar near Mettupalayam.

Forest Department officials mentioned that the exact cause of death, whether he succumbed to the elephant’s attack or died of shock while being pursued by the animal, will be determined after the post-mortem examination.

Another security guard, Suresh Kumar, and an Emeritus Professor from the Department of Environmental Sciences also sustained injuries while attempting to flee from the elephant.

According to the Forest Department, their frontline staff received an alert about a tusker’s presence on the university campus around 10:30 a.m. The staff successfully guided the elephant back towards the forest.

Further surveillance on the campus revealed that three individuals, including Shanmugam, had suffered injuries after being chased by the same elephant at approximately 11:15 a.m.

It was uncovered that Shanmugam and Suresh had ventured near the Department of Environmental Sciences upon hearing about the tusker’s presence. The elephant charged at them, prompting them to run for cover. Tragically, Shanmugam was found unconscious and passed away while being rushed to a hospital.

Suresh and Emeritus Professor P. Lakshmanaperumalsamy, who was in close proximity to his Department, sustained minor injuries while fleeing from the elephant.

The area where the elephant attack occurred on the university campus is located approximately 650 metres away from the forest boundary, falling under the Maruthamalai beat of the Coimbatore forest range. Frontline staff from the Department worked tirelessly to guide the elephant back towards the forest throughout the evening.

The Forest Department emphasized that they had issued a notice to the university, urging them to implement measures to ensure the safety of their staff, students, and workers from wild animals, as the campus is in close proximity to the forest.
