MIDLAND, Texas (KMID/KPEJ)- UPDATED (11:37 a.m.) The Midland Police Department has identified a victim shot and killed Tuesday evening as 41-year-old John Richard, of Midland.

Location of the Incident

The tragic incident occurred in the quiet neighbourhood of the 6700 block of Rio Bravo in Midland, Texas. The peaceful streets were disrupted by the sound of gunfire, leaving residents in shock and disbelief.

“Upon arrival, officers discovered a male kneeling in the roadway holding a firearm, while a deceased male lay nearby,” MPD said in a statement. “While on the scene detectives reviewed camera footage which depicted the suspect shooting at a residence and also shooting the victim in the roadway.”

The investigation is still ongoing, with law enforcement working tirelessly to piece together the events leading up to the senseless act of violence.

A suspect arrested Tuesday evening in connection with a deadly shooting in Midland has been identified as 34-year-old Samuel O. Omamogho, according to arrest records.

Arrest and Charges

Samuel O. Omamogho, the alleged shooter, was apprehended by officers at the scene of the crime. The 34-year-old has since been charged with Murder and is currently being held in the Midland County Detention Center. His actions have left a community in mourning and seeking answers.

Around 5:44 p.m. on May 21, officers with the Midland Police Department responded to the 6700 block of Rio Bravo after someone called 911 and reported a disturbance with weapons. When officers arrived on the scene, they found one person dead in the street; the victim has not yet been publicly identified.

Jail records show that Omamogho remained in custody as of Wednesday morning, awaiting further legal proceedings.

Because the investigation is ongoing, MPD has not released much information, other than to say one person was dead and another was in custody, so we do not know what events led to the shooting. However, a video posted to Facebook, which garnered thousands of views within hours of the shooting, showed a man walking through a north Midland neighborhood with a firearm in hand.

Eye-Witness Accounts

The shocking video captured Omamogho, walking between two houses; with each approach toward one particular home, he drew his weapon and fired multiple shots, the video showed. Witnesses at the scene identified Omamogho as someone who lived across the street from the home he fired upon and those same witnesses said the homeowner came outside to find out what was going on and was killed in the street.
