Police Raid Cockfight in Hawaiian Paradise Park
Authorities recently made a shocking discovery in Hawaiian Paradise Park when they raided a cockfighting operation on 18th Avenue near Kaloli Drive. The raid, which took place on May 18, resulted in the recovery of 25 dead roosters, four injured birds, and approximately $20,000 in cash.
Homeland Security Task Force Involved
According to a statement released by the Hawaii Police Department, officers from the Homeland Security Task Force were instrumental in serving the search warrant on the residence where the illegal cockfighting activities were taking place. In addition to the chickens and cash, authorities also seized gambling records, cockfighting paraphernalia, and a small amount of marijuana.
Large Turnout at Cockfight
It was estimated that more than 100 people attended the cockfight, highlighting the widespread nature of this illegal activity in the area. The presence of such a large crowd underscores the need for continued law enforcement efforts to crack down on animal cruelty and illegal gambling.
Arrests Made
As a result of the raid, Lehualani K. Kaleiwahea, 49, of Hilo, and her son, Isaac Dylan H. Ragasa-Kaleiwahea, 28, of Keaau, were arrested on suspicion of 29 counts of cruelty to animals, as well as charges related to promotion of gambling and possession of gambling records. Domonick Uchima, 37, of Kurtistown, was also arrested on suspicion of promoting gambling.
All three individuals were released pending further investigation, with charges yet to be filed. This development has raised concerns about the enforcement of laws against animal cruelty and illegal gambling in the region.
Advocacy for Stronger Legislation
Following the arrests, Wayne Pacelle, president of Animal Wellness Action and Center for a Humane Society, expressed disappointment in the defeat of House Bill 1980 during this year’s legislative session. The bill, introduced by Rep. David Tarnas, aimed to elevate cockfighting from a misdemeanor offense to a Class C felony, carrying a potential five-year prison term upon conviction.
Pacelle’s remarks underscore the urgent need for stronger legislation to combat animal cruelty and illegal gambling in Hawaii. The failure to pass such measures has allowed these activities to persist unabated, endangering both animals and communities.
Tragic Past Incidents
Pacelle referenced a previous incident in Maili, Oahu, where a cockfighting event turned deadly, resulting in the shooting deaths of a man and a woman, as well as injuries to others. The severity of such incidents highlights the urgent need for decisive action to address the root causes of animal cruelty and illegal gambling.
