Former USF Football Player Involved in Sarasota Shooting

SARASOTA, Fla. – Brian Battie, a former USF football player, was critically injured in a Sarasota shootout that tragically took the life of his brother, Tommie Battie. The incident occurred early Saturday morning near the Hookah Lounge Marrakech on 17th Street in Sarasota around 3:30 a.m.

Deputies reported that shots were fired, resulting in Tommie Battie’s death and injuries to four others, including Brian, who sustained a gunshot wound to the head.

In the aftermath of the shooting, panicked individuals can be heard in 911 calls pleading for help, capturing the chaos and fear that ensued.

Video Evidence Reveals Details of the Shooting

Newly released documents and surveillance footage shed light on the sequence of events that unfolded that fateful morning. Video footage shows bullets flying at approximately 3:29 a.m., capturing a black man identified as Darryl Bernard Brookins wearing a gray hoodie and pants near the scene.

The footage shows Brian and Tommie Battie approaching Brookins, who promptly drew a firearm and began shooting at the brothers. In response, both Battie brothers returned fire, leading to Brian’s injury and Tommie’s tragic death.

Following the shooting, Brookins fled the scene, prompting a manhunt by authorities to bring him to justice.

Arrest Made in Connection with the Shooting

Hours after the incident, detectives received Crime Stoppers tips identifying Brookins as the shooter. Subsequent investigation revealed Brookins’ prior felony convictions, leading to his arrest on charges of murder and felon in possession of a firearm.

In a statement to FOX 13, Brookins’s defense attorney asserted his client’s innocence, claiming self-defense in the face of armed individuals, including the Battie brothers.

Despite the arrest, the investigation continues to uncover more details surrounding the tragic event.

Brian Battie, a standout athlete from Sarasota High School and Braden River High School, pursued a collegiate football career at the University of South Florida before transferring to Auburn University. He excelled as a running back and kick returner, showcasing his talent on the field.
