Tragic Death of Detainee Sparks Outrage in Lakhimpur, Assam

Lakhimpur: The recent death of a detainee at Khelmati Police Station in Assam’s Lakhimpur district has sent shockwaves through the local community. The deceased, 42-year-old Arsabh Ali, hailing from South Chandmari in Lakhimpur, was taken into custody by Khelmati police in connection with a stolen mobile phone that he had reportedly purchased. Ali was suspected to be the leader of a mobile phone theft gang, according to police sources.

The tragic incident occurred when Ali suddenly fell ill and collapsed within the premises of the police station, leading to his untimely demise. The circumstances surrounding his death have raised concerns and prompted immediate action from Assam Director General of Police (DGP) GP Singh. In response to the incident, DGP Singh issued directives via social media, announcing several immediate actions to address the situation.

“Reference death in police custody at Khelmati OP District North Lakhimpur – 1. IC of Khelmati OP has been placed under suspension along with the night sentry. 2. An independent enquiry has been ordered by Addl SP Biswanath. 3. All mandatory provisions of law & directions of NHRC/AHRC are being followed. 4. Unfortunately, this tragic incident is not an isolated case. In a separate and unrelated incident last week, a 32-year-old man and his minor ‘wife’ allegedly died by suicide in police custody in a village in Bihar’s Araria district. The man had recently married his 14-year-old sister-in-law, leading to their detention by the police due to legal age requirements for marriage in India.

Violent Outburst

Following the deaths of the man and his minor wife, enraged villagers surrounded the Tarabari police station, vandalised the premises, pelted stones at police personnel, and set the station on fire. The villagers alleged that the two detainees had died as a result of being beaten while in custody.

A CCTV footage supposedly from the police lockup captured a chilling moment where a man climbed onto the lockup door and hung himself using a cloth. The heartbreaking turn of events fueled the anger of the local community, leading to the violent outburst at the Tarabari police station.

The incidents in both Lakhimpur and Bihar serve as stark reminders of the need for transparency and accountability within law enforcement agencies. The tragic loss of lives in police custody has sparked public outrage and demands for justice for the deceased detainees.

As investigations continue into these distressing incidents, the communities affected by these tragedies are left grappling with grief and seeking answers to the troubling questions surrounding the deaths of Arsabh Ali in Lakhimpur and the man and minor ‘wife’ in Bihar.
