A man from Sarasota has been arrested in connection with a fatal shooting that occurred on May 18 in the Tallywood Centre Plaza parking lot. Darryl Bernard Brookins, 28, was taken into custody by the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office with the assistance of the U.S. Marshals Task Force. The incident involved multiple gunshot victims, including Tommie L. Battie IV, who was fatally wounded. His brother, Brian R. Battie, a member of the Auburn University football team, remains in critical condition. Brookins has been charged with murder, attempted murder, and possession of a firearm as a felon. He is currently detained at the Sarasota County jail.

Man Arrested in Connection with Fatal Shooting in Sarasota Parking Lot

A Sarasota man has been taken into custody in relation to the tragic events that unfolded in the Tallywood Centre Plaza parking lot on May 18. Darryl Bernard Brookins, 28, was apprehended by Sarasota County Sheriff’s deputies on May 22 with the help of the U.S. Marshals Task Force.

Details of the Incident

According to reports, deputies received a distress call around 3:30 a.m. from the Hookah Lounge Marrakech. Upon arrival, they discovered multiple individuals with gunshot wounds in the parking lot. Tragically, one of the victims, Tommie L. Battie IV, had succumbed to a gunshot wound to the chest. His brother, Brian R. Battie, also sustained a gunshot wound to the head and was rushed to Sarasota Memorial Hospital.

Victims and Survivors

Notably, Brian Battie is a member of the Auburn University football team and is currently in critical condition. The football star’s progress is being closely monitored by Auburn Head Coach Hugh Freeze. Additionally, three other individuals, Lee Claridy, Tosha Johnson, and Broderick McDaniel, were also treated for gunshot wounds at local medical facilities.

Suspect identified

Surveillance footage obtained from a nearby establishment revealed a Black male, later identified as Brookins, loitering near the window of the hookah lounge. As the Battie brothers approached him, Brookins brandished a firearm and opened fire. In the chaos that ensued, the brothers retaliated before falling to the ground.

Arrest and Charges

Brookins fled the scene on foot, abandoning his vehicle in the parking lot. Through a combination of his driver’s license photo and the surveillance video, authorities were able to confirm Brookins as the perpetrator. The Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office disclosed that Brookins has four prior felony convictions on his record.

As a result of his alleged actions, Brookins faces charges of murder, attempted murder, and unlawful possession of a firearm as a felon. He is currently being held at the Sarasota County jail pending further legal proceedings.
