Man Arrested in Connection with Shooting Incident in Sarasota, Florida
In a recent incident in Sarasota, Florida, deputies arrested a local man accused of injuring Auburn running back Brian Battie and fatally shooting his older brother. The suspect, Darryl Bernard Brookins, 28, faces charges of murder, attempted murder, and possession of a firearm as a felon.
According to reports from the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office, Brookins had four prior felony convictions, as stated in the Tampa Bay Times. The tragic event took place in the parking lot of the Hookah Lounge Marrakech in the early hours of Saturday, where Brookins allegedly shot Brian Battie, Tommie Battie IV, and three other individuals.
Details of the Shooting Incident
Brian Battie, 22, sustained a gunshot wound to the head and was rushed to Sarasota Memorial Hospital for treatment. Meanwhile, Tommie Battie IV, 24, tragically succumbed to a single gunshot wound to the chest at the scene of the incident. The other three victims, aged between 36 and 46, also suffered injuries in the shooting.
Brian Battie, a Sarasota native, previously played football at the University of South Florida before transferring to Auburn. His on-field performance for the Tigers included 227 rushing yards and a touchdown during the 2023 season.
Community Response and Support
In the wake of the incident, Brian Battie’s godmothers initiated a GoFundMe campaign to aid the family in covering expenses. The fundraising effort has garnered over $98,000 in donations thus far.
Sarasota City Commissioner Kyle Battie, a cousin of the Battie brothers, expressed deep sorrow over the senseless violence that transpired. He emphasised the need for the community to unite in preventing such tragic outcomes, particularly for the youth.
As the investigation continues, there have been no official updates on Brian Battie’s condition. However, Auburn coach Hugh Freeze recently shared that the young athlete remains on a ventilator.
