Three young men tragically drowned while visiting a Florida lock and dam after a church youth event in ALVA, Fla. The victims, Santos Tiul-Chen, Pedro Pascal, and Victor Leonardo Pedro Gaspar, were all members of Jesus Es La Verdad Church in Fort Myers. A close friend, Neyda Velasquez, expressed shock and sorrow over the incident, highlighting the heroism of the victims who attempted to save their friend. Despite paramedics’ efforts, none of the three survived. The Lee County Sheriff’s Office reported that the incident occurred when Tiul-Chen, who lacked swimming experience, went into the water and struggled, leading to a chain of events that resulted in the tragic loss of these young lives.

Tragic Drowning Incident at Franklin Lock and Dam
In a heartbreaking turn of events, a group of young men met a tragic fate at the Franklin Lock and Dam in ALVA, Florida. The victims, Santos Tiul-Chen, Pedro Pascal, and Victor Leonardo Pedro Gaspar, attended a church youth event at Jesus Es La Verdad Church in Fort Myers before the incident occurred.

The community is still reeling from the loss of these young souls, as a memorial with pictures and flowers now adorns the walls of the church. Close friend Neyda Velasquez expressed the shock and disbelief felt by everyone who knew the victims.

Tragic Turn of Events

According to reports from the Lee County Sheriff’s Office, the tragedy unfolded when Tiul-Chen, who lacked swimming experience, entered the water at the lock and encountered difficulties. The water’s depth in the area, approximately 10 feet deep, posed a significant challenge.
Heroic Rescue Attempt
Pascal courageously jumped in to assist Tiul-Chen, but he too began to struggle. Gaspar, not hesitating for a moment, joined the rescue effort. Tragically, all three young men went under the water and did not resurface.
Despite the valiant efforts of the victims, none survived the harrowing ordeal. Velasquez shared that two of the victims were skilled swimmers and displayed immense bravery in trying to save their friend.
Community Mourning
The community is in mourning following this devastating loss. The Army Corps of Engineers has since erected new signs in English and Spanish in the area, cautioning against swimming in the vicinity.
As the families and friends of Santos Tiul-Chen, Pedro Pascal, and Victor Leonardo Pedro Gaspar grapple with their grief, the church congregation and wider community stand in solidarity during this difficult time.
