Three young men tragically drowned in a Florida river after a church youth event, leaving their community in shock. Tragic Drowning Incident at Franklin Lock and Dam
In a heart-wrenching turn of events, a group of young men tragically lost their lives in a drowning incident at the Franklin Lock and Dam in Alva, Florida. The victims, 17-year-old Santos Tiul-Chen, 21-year-old Pedro Pascal, and 19-year-old Victor Leonardo Pedro Gaspar, had attended a church youth event at Jesus Es La Verdad Church in Fort Myers before the fateful incident took place.
After the church event concluded, a group of individuals decided to stay behind and enjoy a swim at the lock and dam. Neyda Velasquez, a close friend of the victims, expressed the shock and disbelief felt by everyone in the aftermath of the tragedy. She recalled how she had seen one of the victims just days before the incident, highlighting the unexpected nature of the events that unfolded.
Heroic Acts Amidst Tragedy
The Lee County Sheriff’s Office revealed that the incident occurred when Tiul-Chen, who lacked swimming experience, entered the water and encountered difficulties. Despite the risks, Pascal and Gaspar bravely jumped in to aid their friend, showing immense courage and selflessness in their actions. Tragically, all three young men succumbed to the water’s depths and did not resurface.
Paramedics attempted life-saving measures on the victims, but sadly, none of them survived the ordeal. Velasquez commended the bravery of the two victims who knew how to swim, emphasizing their heroic efforts to rescue their friend in distress.
Community Mourning and Safety Measures
The local community, as well as the congregation of Jesus Es La Verdad Church, mourned the loss of these young lives. A memorial with photos and flowers was set up inside the church to honour the memories of Tiul-Chen, Pascal, and Gaspar.
In response to the tragic incident, the Army Corps of Engineers installed new signage in English and Spanish at the site, explicitly stating, “No swimming.” This measure aims to prevent future accidents and promote safety awareness among visitors to the area.
As the families and friends of the victims come to terms with their devastating loss, the legacy of Tiul-Chen, Pascal, and Gaspar will be remembered for their courage, camaraderie, and unwavering faith.
