Discovery of Submerged Artifacts
The investigation began earlier this month when a private dive company detected submerged artifacts in Overpeck Creek in the Village of Ridgefield Park. Authorities were notified, and a joint operation involving state and local police, the Bergen County Sheriff’s Department, and the county’s regional dive team was launched.
Confirmation of Human Remains
County divers confirmed the presence of human remains, which appeared to be approximately 40 years old. Forensic testing was necessary to establish the identity of the individual. On Monday, it was revealed that the recovered remains belonged to Charles Murphy.
Details of Murphy’s Disappearance
Charles Murphy, a resident of Maywood, was last seen on April 28, 1982, after dropping a friend off in Ridgefield Park. He and three other friends had attended a game at Yankee Stadium and were returning home when he disappeared. The circumstances surrounding his disappearance are still under investigation.

Authorities initially suspected foul play in Murphy’s disappearance, but in 1984, it was reported that there was no indication of such circumstances.
