Hong Kong immigration officers have apprehended 15 suspected illegal labourers from mainland China, paying them up to double the city’s minimum wage of HK$40 (US$5) per hour to work as cleaners and dishwashers. Hong Kong immigration officers have recently made a significant bust, rounding up 15 suspected illegal labourers from mainland China. These individuals were allegedly paid up to double the city’s minimum wage of HK$40 (US$5) per hour to work as cleaners and dishwashers. The operation took place in the bustling district of Yau Ma Tei, where the suspects were found living and working illegally.
The Raid and Arrests
Deputy Commander Luk Pui-yin of the Immigration Department’s task force led the raid on a Yau Ma Tei flat, where four of the group were identified as illegal immigrants. The remaining individuals had entered the city as visitors but overstayed their permitted time. Shockingly, one of them had been living in the city illegally for 6½ years.
Discovery of Fake Identity Cards
The workers, consisting of four men and 11 women, were detained during a daybreak raid on a suspected dormitory for illegal labourers. Immigration officers seized 17 bogus Hong Kong identity cards, described by Luk as of “poor quality” and “easily distinguishable” from real ones. It was revealed that the suspects used these fake identity cards to secure employment in Hong Kong.
Illegal Jobs and Salaries
The investigation unveiled that the suspects were paid between HK$50 and HK$80 per hour for various illegal jobs, including cleaners, dishwashers, and odd-job workers. Their salaries exceeded the city’s minimum wage, which was raised to HK$40 an hour on May 1 last year. The raided flat on Reclamation Street, subdivided into four rooms with bunk beds, was used as a dormitory for these illegal workers.
Continued Investigations and Consequences
Luk emphasized that investigations are ongoing to identify those responsible for hiring the suspects, overseeing the flat, and potentially involving a syndicate providing “one-stop services” to them. The immigration authorities are dedicated to safeguarding local workers’ interests and maintaining stability in the job market. Illegal workers face punishment of up to two years in jail and a HK$50,000 fine, while possessing or using a forged Hong Kong identity card carries a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison and a HK$100,000 fine. Employers of illegal workers may face a maximum fine of HK$500,000 and up to 10 years in jail.
