Details of the Attack

The fatal incident occurred in the city of Bamyan, where a group of six Spanish citizens, including the three Catalans, were targeted in a terrorist attack claimed by the Islamic State branch in the Khorasan Province.

Reports from witnesses state that the group was in a market in Bamyan when an assailant started shooting from an alley, resulting in the tragic loss of three Catalans and an Afghan citizen. Additionally, four other foreigners and an Afghan were wounded in the attack, with one woman from the Basque Country in serious condition.

Following the attack, two Spaniards with minor injuries have safely left Afghanistan, while the Spanish government has ensured that a special delegation remains in Kabul until all affected tourists have departed the country.

Identification of the Victims

The Catalan women who lost their lives in the attack have been identified as Susana Vilar Bühler and her daughter Elena Schröder Vilar, both prominent pharmacists in Barcelona and Terrassa. The third deceased Catalan citizen is known only as R.B.R., born in Girona.

Condolences and Tributes

The main authorities of Catalonia expressed their condolences to the families of the victims through a minute of silence held in Plaça de Sant Jaume in Barcelona. The ceremony was attended by various dignitaries, including the mayor of Barcelona, the Catalan acting president, and the president of the parliament.

During the tribute, homage was also paid to Toni Espadas, a photographer and tourist guide from Sabadell who tragically lost his life in Ethiopia while working on a television program.

Claim of Responsibility

The Islamic State in the Khorasan Province claimed responsibility for the attack, stating that their fighters targeted Western tourists and Shiites in the market area of Bamyan. The group’s news agency reported that the assailants shot “seven Christians” and five Shiites during the incident.
