The incident took place on Stearns School Road near Fuller Road, where a vehicle collided with a pole. The initial crash occurred at Route 41 and Stearns School Road. An 88-year-old woman driving a Toyota Rav4 and a 20-year-old man driving a Kia Forte collided at the intersection. The Rav4 driver then accelerated and crashed into a utility pole, causing critical injuries to both occupants. The deceased passenger has been identified as 89-year-old Leonard Blum of Gurnee. Tragic Accident in Gurnee Leads to Fatal Outcome
In a devastating turn of events, a serious traffic crash occurred in Gurnee on Saturday afternoon, resulting in the tragic death of a passenger. The incident, which is currently under investigation by Lake County Sheriff’s traffic crash investigators, is believed to have been caused by a driver mistakenly pressing the accelerator instead of the brake.
Details of the Incident
The accident took place at around 2:15 p.m. on Stearns School Road near Fuller Road in Gurnee. Gurnee Police officers were first called to the scene after a vehicle collided with a pole. Upon further investigation, it was revealed that the same vehicle had been involved in a prior crash at Route 41 and Stearns School Road.
The Lake County Sheriff’s deputies were then summoned to the scene, as the intersection of Route 41 and Stearns School Road falls under their jurisdiction. The initial collision involved a Toyota Rav4 driven by an 88-year-old woman from Gurnee and a Kia Forte driven by a 20-year-old from Richmond.
Sequence of Events
Eyewitnesses reported that both vehicles attempted to make turns at the intersection when the traffic light changed from green to yellow to red. The resulting collision caused minor damage to both vehicles. Following the initial impact, the driver of the Rav4 inadvertently pressed the accelerator instead of the brake, causing the vehicle to accelerate uncontrollably.
The Rav4 veered off course and collided with a utility pole near the intersection of Stearns School and Fuller Road. Both the driver and passenger of the Rav4 sustained critical injuries and were rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment. Tragically, the passenger, identified as 89-year-old Leonard Blum from Gurnee, succumbed to his injuries and passed away.
