Police Shooting and Stabbing Incident in Columbia Plaza
Over the weekend, the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) responded to a distress call at the Columbia Plaza apartment complex located in the 2400 block of Virginia Avenue in Northwest Washington, D.C. The call was in response to a welfare check on a man experiencing a mental health crisis.
Incident Details
Upon arrival at the scene, officers encountered an individual who informed them about their friend’s mental health situation. As they attempted to take the man into custody, he unexpectedly produced a knife and stabbed one of the officers in the neck. In response to the threat, another officer discharged their weapon, injuring the suspect just before 2:30 p.m.
Despite efforts to subdue the suspect with a TASER, it proved ineffective in this situation. As a result of the incident, four officers have been placed on administrative leave pending further investigation.
Suspect Identified
The individual responsible for the attack has been identified as 28-year-old Jonathan Jefferson from Northwest, D.C. Following the altercation, emergency personnel provided immediate medical attention to Jefferson before transporting him to a nearby hospital for treatment of non life-threatening injuries.

Residents in the area, like Ashley Henry, expressed their shock and concern over the incident. Henry, who was assisting her son with moving into the apartment complex, emphasized the importance of safety in light of such events. “It is scary. I know it’s dangerous everywhere now, but, you just pray everything’s gonna be okay,” she remarked.

This recent shooting incident echoes a similar occurrence that took place approximately five months ago in January. During that incident, an MPD officer fatally shot a man during a crisis intervention call after the individual allegedly attacked a paramedic.
