The Incident at Hyde Park, Sydney

Footage has been released and police have charged a man who will appear in court today after he allegedly stabbed a police officer in the head near Sydney’s Hyde Park before demanding police shoot him. The incident took place at the intersection of Castlereagh and Park Streets on Sunday (May 20).

Details of the Attack

Two officers were conducting traffic duties at the busy intersection when a male police officer identified as Constable Elvis Poa, aged 35 and attached to the Kings Cross Area Command, was approached from behind by a man shortly after 1pm. The assailant produced a knife and stabbed the officer in the head before fleeing the scene.

Pursuit and Arrest

The alleged attacker ran into Hyde Park, with the injured officer and a female constable in pursuit. Officers directed the man to drop the knife, but he continued to brandish the weapon. More police arrived at the scene and the suspect was eventually tasered and apprehended.

Police Response

“Whilst he was in the park, he still had the knife in his hand and he was demanding that police shoot him,” Detective Superintendent Martin Fileman said. The suspect, a 34-year-old man known to police, was taken to Royal Prince Alfred Hospital under police guard for assessment.

Medical Treatment

Constable Poa was treated by NSW Ambulance paramedics for two wounds to his head and was taken to St Vincent’s Hospital. Scans revealed he suffered two skull fractures and remains in a stable condition. The 34-year-old suspect was arrested and taken to hospital for assessment.

Legal Proceedings

Upon being released from hospital, the man was charged with cause wounding/grievous bodily harm to person with intent to murder. He was refused bail and is set to appear before Downing Centre Local Court today.
