UWM armed robbery

The armed robbery took place in front of Cambridge Commons residence hall at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee around 10 p.m. on May 10. A student reported to the authorities that an individual brandishing a firearm stole her friend’s high-value eyeglasses – valued at approximately £3,500 – before fleeing the scene in a vehicle, as per a legal complaint.

James was identified as a suspect, and the complaint states surveillance video captured him fleeing the scene in a gray Infiniti after the robbery. Surveillance footage from within Cambridge Commons showed James and Braemmert, among other individuals, entering the residence hall earlier that evening.

The complaint further details that surveillance video also depicted Braemmert exiting Cambridge Commons and entering the Infiniti before James was observed taking the glasses and dashing to the waiting vehicle – at one point pointing a firearm at an individual. The driver was believed to be an individual named “Lil Mari.”

Police chase

In the afternoon of May 12, law enforcement officers on patrol spotted the gray Infiniti near Sherman and Villard. Authorities attempted to stop the vehicle, but the driver evaded them by speeding down an alley. The legal complaint indicates that the car reached speeds of around 90 mph, and the pursuit concluded when the driver lost control, colliding with another vehicle and a fire hydrant. The chase spanned less than a mile.

Prosecutors revealed that Smith-Freeman was the driver, with Braemmert and James as passengers. All three individuals exited the vehicle and attempted to flee but were swiftly apprehended. Law enforcement officers discovered three fully-automatic handguns at the crash site.
