The family of a driver involved in a crash with a Falls Police cruiser is expressing concerns about a press release issued by the city regarding the incident that took place at the intersection of Niagara Falls Boulevard and 80th Street on Wednesday morning. The press release stated that no one was “seriously injured” in the accident, but family members of Rosario Corieri, 87, have shared that he has been transferred to the trauma unit at the Erie County Medical Center in Buffalo for treatment of a brain bleed after being initially evaluated at Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center.
**Details of the Incident**
Maryanne Corieri, Rosario’s wife, spoke to the Gazette and expressed the severity of her husband’s condition. She shared, “My husband is very seriously ill. He was taken by ambulance to Niagara Falls Memorial. After all the tests, they found he had a brain bleed so he was taken by ambulance to ECMC trauma center.” Rosario, who has faced numerous health challenges in the past, is currently in a fragile state and undergoing treatment for his injuries.
The crash, which occurred at 10:22 on Wednesday, is still under investigation by Falls Police Crash Management Unit investigators. According to the police press release, a marked Falls Police cruiser, car No. 81, was responding to a call for service in “emergency mode” when it passed through a red light at the intersection and collided with a 2010 Nissan heading north. The impact caused the police cruiser to spin into a 2016 Jeep traveling westbound.
**Family’s Account**
Roy Corieri, Rosario’s son, clarified that his father was evaluated at NFMMC initially but was later transferred to ECMC for further treatment. As of Friday, Rosario remains at ECMC receiving care for a brain bleed and broken ribs. Roy mentioned that his father was driving alone and had started to cross the intersection when the patrol car struck his vehicle. He added, “My father claims he did not hear a siren. I don’t know if the police car actually had the siren on. I guess that would be something they will be looking into.”
Witnesses at the scene reported hearing the siren of the patrol car and seeing its flashing lights as it approached the intersection. Police investigators stated that at the time of the press release, EMTs at the scene did not believe any of the individuals involved were seriously injured. However, further testing, including a CAT scan, revealed Rosario’s brain bleed, leading to his transfer to ECMC.

As of Friday evening, police have been informed that doctors at ECMC have been able to “stabilize” Rosario’s condition. The family is closely monitoring his progress and hoping for a full recovery.
