Tragic Loss of Space Force Sergeant in Rocky Mountain National Park

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KJCT) – 23-year-old Lucas Macaj, a Space Force Sergeant stationed at Schriever Space Force Base, met a tragic end during a hiking trip to Long’s Peak in Rocky Mountain National Park. The highest point in the park, Long’s Peak is known for its challenging terrain and unpredictable weather conditions. Macaj reached the summit on Mother’s Day but never made it back down. His disappearance sparked a four-day search operation by Rocky Mountain National Park Rangers.

Despite the efforts of search and rescue teams, Macaj’s body was discovered on Mill’s Glacier on the final day of the search. The Boulder County Coroner’s Office will conduct an investigation to determine the official cause of his death.

Details of the Tragic Incident

Following Macaj’s ascent to the summit of Long’s Peak, the area experienced heavy snowfall, high winds, and plummeting temperatures. These harsh conditions likely contributed to the tragic outcome of his hike. The rugged terrain, featuring deep snow, ice, rocks, and boulders, posed a significant challenge for Macaj and other hikers in the area.

Schriever Space Force Base expressed deep sorrow over the loss of Sgt. Lucas Macaj. Col. David A. Pheasant, Space Delta 8 commander, described Macaj as a valued member of their team and extended condolences to his family, friends, and colleagues.

Search and Recovery Efforts

The search and recovery operation for Macaj involved multiple agencies and organizations, including Rocky Mountain National Park search and rescue personnel, Flight for Life Air Ambulance, the State of Colorado Division of Fire Prevention and Control, and the Colorado Army National Guard. These teams worked tirelessly to locate and retrieve Macaj’s remains from the challenging terrain of Mill’s Glacier.

Macaj, who joined the Space Force in August 2023 after transferring from the U.S. Marine Corps, was recognized for his service with the Air and Space Longevity Service Award. His untimely death has left a void within Space Delta 8 and the wider Space Force community.
