A soldier was killed and another wounded in a clash with suspected members of the New People’s Army in Samar. The incident occurred in San Jorge town when the soldiers were attacked while delivering basic services to a village. The rebels, remnants of the Eastern Visayas Regional Party Committee, engaged in a 45-minute firefight with the soldiers. Major General Camilo Ligayo expressed his condolences and reiterated the military’s commitment to ensuring the safety of communities. He urged the remaining rebels to surrender and avail themselves of government programs. The soldier who lost his life, Corporal Reycon Remedio, bravely sacrificed himself in the pursuit of peace.

Deadly Clash Between Government Soldiers and NPA Rebels in Samar
In a tragic incident that shook the peaceful town of San Jorge in Samar, a government soldier lost his life while another was injured in a clash with suspected members of the New People’s Army (NPA).

The fallen soldier, identified as Corporal Reycon Remedio, succumbed to a fatal head injury during the encounter. Private Wilson Layson, on the other hand, sustained injuries to his right arm.
The soldiers, part of the 3rd Infantry Battalion under the 8th Infantry Division based in Catbalogan City, Samar, were in Barangay Gayondato to provide essential services through the Mobile Community Support Sustainment Program.
As they approached the village, they came under fire from the rebels, leading to a 45-minute exchange of gunfire.
According to reports, the rebels involved in the skirmish were remnants of the sub-regional committee of the Eastern Visayas Regional Party Committee.
Major General Camilo Ligayo, the commanding officer of the 8ID, expressed his heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of the fallen soldier.
“It is unfortunate that we have lost another brave soul in the pursuit of peace. Corporal Remedio laid down his life while protecting the residents of Gayondato, striving for lasting peace in Eastern Visayas,” Major General Ligayo stated in a press release.
He reassured the public that the military’s commitment to ensuring the safety and security of communities remains unwavering, calling on active rebels to surrender and avail themselves of government programs aimed at reintegration.
