A 60-year-old tea garden worker in Assam’s Nagaon district, Lucia Ekka, was tragically trampled to death by a herd of wild elephants. The incident occurred near Kaliden tea estate, where she was working during the early hours of Tuesday. Despite efforts by locals and forest officials to save her, Lucia succumbed to her injuries at Tezpur Civil Hospital. A 60-year-old tea garden worker has tragically lost her life after being trampled by a herd of wild elephants in Assam’s Nagaon district, forest officials confirm.

The victim, identified as Lucia Ekka, a resident of Nagaon’s Kaliabor, met with a tragic fate near Kaliden tea estate in the early hours of Tuesday.
According to local reports, Lucia was working near her residence when she unknowingly encountered the herd of wild elephants in search of food.
“She was caught off guard by the elephants and was fatally trampled. We immediately alerted the forest officials, who rushed to the scene and found her in critical condition,” locals shared.
Lucia was swiftly taken to Tezpur Civil Hospital by her family and forest officials, but sadly, she succumbed to her injuries after a few hours. Her body has been sent for postmortem examination and will be handed over to her grieving family, authorities confirmed.
The Assam State Forest Department is diligently implementing measures to address the escalating human-elephant conflicts in the region and strive for harmonious coexistence between the two species.
“The rising incidents of human and elephant fatalities compel us to focus on coexistence. Understanding the behaviour of wild elephants and its interaction with human activities is crucial for finding sustainable solutions,” officials stated.
