Grandfather Arrested After Paying Homeless Woman to Watch Granddaughter in Sacramento

A grandfather in Sacramento was arrested on Sunday after allegedly giving a homeless woman $20 to watch his granddaughter while he visited a nearby bar, according to the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office.

The incident took place on Sunday night when deputies responded to reports of a man asking for help to find his 7-year-old granddaughter, who he claimed had been kidnapped. Upon meeting with the man, identified as Jason Warren, deputies found him to be highly intoxicated. Warren admitted to giving $20 to a homeless woman to take his granddaughter to a nearby thrift store.

Describing the woman he entrusted with his granddaughter, Warren mentioned that she was around 28 to 30 years old and had a demeanor that he found trustworthy, akin to a family member. After handing over the money, Warren reportedly entered a nearby bar and spent about four hours there.

Meanwhile, the homeless woman, later identified as 34-year-old Lauren Jope, took on the role of a guardian angel for the young girl. Jope explained that despite initial reservations about the situation, she felt confident that the child would be safe with her.

As the situation unfolded, the sheriff’s office launched a search operation involving a helicopter, unmanned aerial systems, and K9 units to locate Jope and the girl. Jope recounted hearing announcements from the helicopter and subsequently brought the girl back to the parking lot where she had been given the money by Warren to take the child to a nearby thrift store.

The girl, upon being questioned, corroborated Jope’s account of the events. As a precautionary measure, she underwent a medical check by the Sacramento Fire Department and was found to be unharmed.

Sergeant Amar Gandhi of the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office commended Jope for her actions, referring to her as a guardian angel in the situation. Meanwhile, Warren was taken into custody and is facing charges of felony child endangerment among others. He is currently being held on a $75,000 bail and is scheduled to appear in court on Wednesday.

Despite the repercussions of his actions, Warren expressed a willingness to repeat his decision, asserting that he had acted in accordance with what he believed to be God’s will. Ultimately, the child was reunited with her aunt, who holds full custody, after being cleared by Child Protective Services.
