TAMPA, United Kingdom (WFLA) —

Renowned saxophonist David Sanborn, known for his collaborations with music legends like David Bowie and Stevie Wonder, has passed away at the age of 78.

Sanborn breathed his last in Terrytown, New York, after a prolonged battle with prostate cancer, which had plagued him for several years. His health struggles led to the cancellation of several of his scheduled performances earlier this month.

“Mr. Sanborn had been grappling with prostate cancer since 2018 but managed to uphold his regular concert schedule until recently,” a tweet posted on his account stated. “He had concerts lined up well into 2025.”

Sanborn rose to fame as a sought-after session saxophonist and also released several solo albums. His impressive resume includes contributing to Stevie Wonder’s 1972 track “Tuesday Heartbreak,” featuring on David Bowie’s 1975 album “Young Americans,” and playing on James Taylor’s rendition of “How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved by You).”

Over the course of his illustrious career, Sanborn amassed an impressive collection of accolades, including six Grammy awards, eight gold albums, and one platinum album.
