According to Captain Mitchell Houser, a spokesperson for the Euclid Police Department, officers were responding to a disturbance call at a residence when a gunman ambushed one of the officers, fatally striking him with gunfire. The officer, identified as 23-year-old Jacob Derbin, was rushed to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost expressed his condolences, stating, “The promise to protect is signed with the blood of our officers. The killer who ambushed Officer Derbin will be found and will receive the full measure of justice.”

Suspect Found Dead

The suspect, identified as 24-year-old Deshawn Anthony Vaughn, was the subject of a manhunt following the shooting. However, Vaughn was found dead on Sunday afternoon in a home in Shaker Heights, Ohio. A motive for the shooting is still under investigation.

Rising Incidents of Officer Shootings

This tragic incident comes amidst a concerning trend of violence against law enforcement officers. Just hours before the Ohio shooting, three Atlanta police officers were shot while responding to a call involving an armed suspect. In another recent incident, four members of a U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force were killed in a shootout in Charlotte, North Carolina.

According to the Officer Down Memorial Page, at least 58 law enforcement officers have been killed in the line of duty so far this year, with 22 of those deaths attributed to gunfire.

Decrease in Officer Deaths

Despite the recent spike in violence against law enforcement, there has been a slight decrease in officer deaths compared to previous years. In 2023, 136 federal, state, and local law enforcement officers died in the line of duty, marking a nearly 40% decrease from the previous year.
